The mission of Open Source India (OSI) is simple—to accelerate development and deployment of open source in India, and beyond.

The annual two-day OSI conference has grown into one of Asia’s largest events on open source. It features keynotes, tech talks, workshops, expo booths, Startup Zone, Community Zone, networking lunch, and discussions. Every year the conference attracts 2,000+ delegates, 100+ speakers, 50+ companies, and 8 tracks with 20 workshops and co-located events.

OPEN SOURCE INDIA 2020

This year OSI 2020 took place virtually. It was held on the India Technology Week platform, hosting 6 events with 20,000+ attendees, 400+ exhibitors and sponsors, and 300+ speakers from India and across the globe.

SODA Foundation, a Platinum Sponsor of OSI 2020, participated on both days of the conference. We had the highest participation for any of our online events so far! We were excited to see 326 participants in our SODA Forum, a 3-hour SODA-dedicated mini summit comprising of a keynote and technical talks. Our virtual showcase booth attracted 300+ visitors.

Technical experts, contributors, and supporters from various organizations joined the SODA sessions: SODA, NTT, Yahoo! JAPAN, Microsoft, Huawei, Click2Cloud, MayaData, Wipro, IBM, Cloudera, CCICI, universities and more. Once again, we witnessed the strength of a growing SODA India Community.

Steven gave the keynote “SODA: One Data Network, Infinite Possibilities” on the second day of OSI 2020.  

Steven introduced SODA Foundation, its vision, roadmap, End User Advisory Committee, Incubator, POC methodology, SODA global committees, and SODA Academy. He emphasised the need for consolidation and collaboration for data autonomy in the industry, and how it can be achieved through SODA vendor-agnostic One Data Framework.

  • CCICI (Cloud Computing Innovation Council of India) is joining SODA

Data explosion on a daily basis is the new norm! The use case demands are exploding. There is a huge opportunity to research technologies and develop solutions for data. The challenges are also growing alongside!

SODA Foundation brought industry experts to discuss the latest data challenges, opportunities, and technology trends (Edge Computing, Cloud, Big Data, and more). Our speakers also offered inputs on further collaboration for unified data solutions in open source.

The SODA Forum comprised of technical sessions, lightning talks, demos, and an industry panel discussion.

Kei-san and Sato-san provided insights on why their organizations joined SODA and outlined their key use cases in SODA Projects. They emphasized the importance and value of heterogeneous platforms and storages supported in SODA releases. They also shared some of their requirements for future SODA implementations.

Team Osive is a community of students from India working on various learning projects using open source software. Osive is a grassroot level initiative which strives to bring Top of the Pyramid knowledge to Bottom of the Pyramid students. Joy represented the contributor community in India and shared their experience working with the SODA community. She articulated the challenges and opportunities in open source contribution for a newcomer. Joy also shared her team’s contributions, next steps, and their home lab setup.

“Once upon a time….”, Sanil offered a peek at the key features in SODA Projects through a story of human evolution and data explosion, touching on the catalysts of technological innovations and finally the demands in data management.

Sushanth provided the background, need and value of on-premise heterogeneous storage management, cloud native storage, heterogeneous storage monitoring, unified SODA Multicloud, and future-looking data management at edge. Najmudheen and Ashit covered the high level architectures and use cases of these features.

The team invited the audience to join in the effort to further developer collaboration and community support for new research and development projects in SODA Foundation.

Big data is one of the key areas in data management. Big data workloads are moving towards cloud deployments (multi cloud, hybrid cloud) due to ease of use, hassle free deployments, elasticity, and other advantages. Rajesh shared the necessaries to create enterprise ready cloud service for big data workload deployments. Sunil addressed the key challenges in an efficient big data workload migration to cloud.

Provin and Joseph presented heterogeneous storage monitoring and how performance data can be used for intelligent analytics. They showed a live demo of SODA delfin project and how it can be connected to SODA Multi Cloud project through prometheus and Kafka for archival, analytics, and anomaly detection.

Sai provided an overall view of SODA Community, the governance structure, India Community growth, and activities in 2020. Sai thanked all the contributors and supporters in making India one of the largest communities of SODA Foundation worldwide. Sai also announced upcoming outreach efforts under SODA Academy, including the first boot camp for developers by November.

SODA FOUNDATION VIRTUAL SHOWCASE BOOTH

8th & 9th October 2020

SODA Foundation set up a virtual booth with multiple exhibits on both days of OSI 2020. Over 300 visitors interacted with OpenSDS developers, end users, and contributors at our booth.

Two SODA team members manned the booth, interacting with online visitors and answering their questions in a live call/discussion channel. Exhibits included SODA Foundation videos, introduction, roadmap, SODA Projects, architecture, as well as information on how to join and contribute to SODA.

Besides SODA Forum, SODA Community members also presented features of key SODA Projects in 3 technical sessions at the OSI 2020 conference.

Contributors of SODA Projects

Data management from Kubernetes through CSI is an important area to focus. Kiran and Asif provided SODA experiments on plug and plug CSI drivers which can help to add any existing CSI drivers to a single SODA CSI plugin. This can enable seamless integration of heterogeneous storages to Kubernetes. A live demo was given to demonstrate the advantages of SODA CSI PlugNPlay.
